The Hula Hoops new campaign goes live -- Golden Hoops Film Awards
United Biscuits | 08.06.09
Hula Hoops is back on TV to advertise an exciting new on-pack promotion, an interactive website and a new TV advertising campaign.
Launching in July, the campaign from
United Biscuits
UK (‘UBUK’) will ensure Hula Hoops is the star performer for retailers this summer.
The £78m brand is launching the Golden Hoop Film Awards campaign to encourage consumer participation and, simply get them to do what they usually do when they pick up a pack of Hula Hoops, to put them on their fingers and play with them!
Finger Puppetry in motion
The promotion encourages consumers to take inspiration from the TV campaign and have finger fun with Hula Hoops, challenging them to produce a creative short film using only their fingers and Hula Hoops to win a holiday for a family of four to Hollywood.
This competition has been designed to engage consumers and generate mass consumer awareness. Helen Warren-Piper, Marketing Director of Bagged Snacks at UBUK, comments:
“Hula Hoops is a well established brand with a loyal following. This new TV advertising campaign, along with the on-pack promotion will drive further consumer participation with the brand and will provide retailers with increased sales opportunities.”
Consumers can make their miniature film up to two minutes long and should then upload it onto the dedicated Hula Hoops website www.hulahoops.com where members of the public will vote for their favourite films.
The top 100 voted films will then be short listed and an expert judging panel will decide on the lucky winners who will win a family holiday to Hollywood.
There will also be a people’s award for which consumers will have complete control over who will win.
In addition to this, all voters will be entered into a daily prize draw to win pocket camcorders!
Back on TV
UBUK’s £1.5m marketing campaign promoting the Hula Hoops competition, which includes TV advertising, will be on air from the start of July.
The advertising campaign will see the return of the much-loved brand to TV screens with brand new puppetry inspired films.
Each will have a tag at the end promoting the Golden Hoop Film Awards initiative and will drive sales for retailers.
Further Support
The competition will be communicated across 50 million handypacks and multipacks, on the dedicated Hula Hoops website – www.hulahoops.com and via targeted consumer PR.
The massive consumer awareness generated by this TV and online marketing campaign will provide retailers with increased sales and profit opportunities.
Helen Warren-Piper continues:
“Currently sales are up 15%. Hula Hoops is a much-loved, iconic brand which appeals to a wide range of consumers. This memorable advertising campaign will capture the imagination of consumers and encourage them to get involved. Retailers should stock up now to ensure they make the most of this great exposure and cash in on the incremental sales opportunities this campaign will drive.”

Village People finger puppets star in Hula Hoops TV campaign

People get distracted from everyday life as they make Village People Hula Hoops finger puppets to the soundtrack of ‘YMCA’ in the Publicis-created TV ad for the snack brand, which is part of a integrated campaign.
The campaign for the United Biscuits brand showcases the unique and playful shape of Hula Hoops and is the launch pad for United Biscuits’ Golden Hoop Film Awards integrated campaign, which aims to encourage consumers to take inspiration from the TV ads and produce their own finger puppet films using Hula Hoops.
Participants could win a holiday for a family of four to Hollywood.
The integrated campaign includes TV advertising, on-pack, online, PR and in-store promotional activity.
The TV ads feature a train passenger and decorator who become engrossed in creating finger puppets using their Hula Hoops.
The finger puppet characters include a DJ and two characters from the Village People’s track, ‘YMCA’.
The spot ends with the strapline “in a hole world of their own”.
However, the careers of both would-be puppet entertainers are cut short as they are caught out by the people around them — and do what all good Hula Hoop finger puppeteers do and quickly snaffle their puppet snacks.
The two 30-second films, directed by Mark Denton, will air in the UK from Monday July 6th.
Helen Warren-Piper, marketing director of Bagged Snacks at UBUK, said: “This new TV advertising campaign, along with the on-pack promotion and Hula Hoops website will drive further consumer engagement with the brand providing retailers with increased sales opportunities.
“Some brands are the keepers of undeniable truths. Hula Hoops is one of those brands — anyone who tells you they can eat a bag without first putting them on their fingers and giving them a wiggle, is a big fat fibber.
“The resulting films from Publicis and public alike are testament to this truth.”
The ads were written by Gary Turner and art directed by Jamie Marshall. Joint executive creative director were Tom Ewart & Adam Kean.
Media planning and buying was through MediaEdge:cia and the campaign will be on air throughout July and August.
The on pack promotion for the Golden Hoop Film Awards for 50m packs of Hula Hoops was designed by Wax Communications.
The website was created by United Biscuits’ digital agency InboxDMG. The website also includes film-making tips and information on the Hula Hoops range.
Members of the public can upload their own finger puppet video clips and vote at hulahoops.com.
